Precise, fast, reliable: SLM Solutions presents the new SLM 280 2.0 at the formnext 2016

The SLM Solutions Group AG will present their new SLM 280 2.0 at this year's formnext at booth H50 in hall 3.1 for the first time. On 15 November 2016 the new machine will be unveiled and presented to the trade fair audience. The SLM 280 2.0 combines performance and productivity with comprehensive monitoring functions for process control.

With the new SLM 280 2.0, the leading machine manufacturer in the area of metal-based additive manufacturing technology makes the next logical step towards production engineering. The SLM 280 2.0 is available in three models, providing either single optics (1x 400W or 1x 700W), dual optics (1x 700W and 1x 1000W) or twin optics (2x 400W or 2x 700W). The powder bed is then exposed to the beams via a 3D scanning optical unit. The new machine also uses the hull-and-core exposure technique applying two different beam profiles which can be used either independently or in parallel operation increasing the productivity of the build process significantly. With this method, two lasers (1,000 W) work simultaneously and in parallel and are thus able to process several powder layers during one melting process. Depending on the component arrangement, an 80% faster build-up rate per time unit can be achieved using the multi-beam technique. The patented bi-directional powder coating further shortens the production times for individually manufactured metal components.

The comprehensive monitoring system specially developed for the SLM process supports the stringent process control which ensures the high standards of quality of the manufactured components.

The layout of the SLM 280 2.0 in its entirety is complemented by the 2+1 filter solution which is fitted as standard. Two main filters work in parallel nearly doubling the life-cycle of the individual filters in comparison with previous solutions. As a result, costs for consumables are reduced and the life-cycle of the filters is extended. Deployment of a fine filter reduces the particle concentration in the filtered process gas considerably which, in turn, further protects individual machine components.

The new developments not only guarantee the high quality standards in the production process but also increase process safety significantly.
