20 Years of Euromold: SLM Solutions presents innovations for additive manufacturing

SLM Solutions at EuroMold from 3. -6.12.2013, Halle 11.0, booth D86

Lübeck, November 25, 2013. SLM Solutions, a leader in the engineering of additive manufacturing systems, presented at the World Fair for Moldmaking and Tooling, Design and Application Development, the latest developments in the SLM technology at booth D86 in hall 11 The new system for materials recovery PSA 500 will be unveiled to the public.

SLM Solutions shows in Frankfurt with the new system for automatic powder recovery again the pioneering technology for manufacturing and producing industry.

Dr. Markus Rechlin, CEO of SLM Solutions GmbH: "We see ourselves as a pioneer and trendsetter in the manufacturing technology for many industries from automotive and mechanical engineering to medicine-up to the air and space technology. We will surprise this year the industry with a new development. With the PSA 500, our system for automatic powder recovery, we go one step further in the additive manufacturing."

The PSA 500 operates autonomously. With automatic powder recovery, the entire unused powder obtained during the SLM process led from the build chamber through a discharge station for vibrating screens conditioning. By coupled with the seeving ultrasound unit a very fine grain size and a higher yield can be ensured. The seeving process has no influence on the parallel construction processes and reducing unproductive downtime.

In addition to the new developments Stefan Ritt, Sales and Marketing Manager of the SLM Solutions GmbH, enriched on 5 December 2013 at 10.30 clock in the design + engineering lecture forum in Hall 11.0 Stand F 68 with his lecture, “Increasing productivity through new multi-laser SLM systems for metals” the fair offer and gives a deeper insight into the current state in the generative manufacturing technology and developments for production.

DPE invests in SLM Solutions GmbH

Lübeck, April 10, 2013.

  • Growth capital investment for the technology leader in metal-based additive manufacturing technologies
  • Expansion of industrial serial production at the company’s Lübeck plant

Funds advised by DPE Deutsche Private Equity GmbH („DPE“) invest in the fast growing market for metal-based additive manufacturing technologies (3D-printing of solid metal parts) and provide growth capital to owner-managed SLM Solutions GmbH („SLM“). CEO H.J. Ihde and Commercial Director H. Schöneborn will remain significant shareholders in SLM and continue to lead the Company’s operations to ensure a continuous and sustainable development of the Company. DPE is a Munich-based investor focused on long-term growth investments in small and medium-sized companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. SLM and DPE agreed not to disclose contractual details of the transaction.

SLM, headquartered in Lübeck, Germany, has more than 10 years experience in laser-based metal additive manufacturing (“Selective Laser Melting”) and is one of the pioneers in the development of this technology. In this manufacturing process, microscopically thin deposits of metal powder (e.g. titanium, steel, aluminium or gold) are successively welded together by high-precision lasers to create solid metal parts. Currently, the technology is mainly used for prototyping as well as single and zero series production of highly complex parts that cannot be manufactured by traditional methods.

SLM introduced selective laser melting to the market in 2002. In 2006, SLM was the first company to use aluminium and titanium in this manufacturing process. Today, SLM is a global leader in the production of additive manufacturing production systems for prototypes and serial parts, as well as for vacuum and metal casting machines.

Although the global market is still small compared to traditional production technologies, it is expected to develop into a sizable industry in the mid-term, driven by the accelerating application in small series manufacturing. SLM products have been used for many years in a research and development environment and are increasingly used in various industrial applications (e.g. aerospace, automotive, medical, dental and tooling).

Volker Hichert, managing partner at DPE, said “Due to its continuous drive for innovation and its flexibility, SLM already holds a strong market position.” Lars Becker, Director at DPE, further added, "With the support of DPE, SLM can now expand its market position in this dynamic environment through greater investments in technology, sales and service."

CEO Hans-Joachim Ihde believes that the DPE investment will open up new opportunities to SLM. He commented: “As an innovations-driven company, we have been instrumental in developing Selective Laser Melting technologies for the production of prototypes and small series components. With the investment from our new shareholder we want to further develop SLM, and bolster its acceptance as a production technology across many sectors. DPE is the right partner for us to take advantage of the exceptional market growth anticipated in the medium-term.”

Volker Hichert and Lars Becker are responsible for the transaction at DPE.

The seller was advised by CMS Hasche Sigle and the Future Materials Group. The acquirer was advised by Ebner Stolz Mönning Bachem, Codex Partners and Honert & Partner.

SLM Solutions and EADS are working together in additive manufacturing techniques

Lübeck, February 21, 2013. SLM Solutions and EADS Innovation Works have signed a cooperation agreement to work together on metal alloys for use in additive manufacturing techniques and SLM systems. EADS Innovation Works does assist SLM Solutions in this cooperation in the field of research and development.

The Additive Layer Manufacturing Method is engaged in the production of aircraft parts and components and gets more and more into focus. It is the understanding of the characterization of metals that will hold the key to the successful use of SLM in this industry.

EADS Innovation Works is expanding its research capacity in SLM and signed a cooperation agreement with SLM Solutions. EADS Innovation Works will locate an SLM machine SLM® 125 HL at its Ottobrunn laboratories to explore the metal characterization of a full range of alloys. As part of the cooperation, EADS Innovation Works will support SLM with research and development services.

“This system is perfectly suited for material investigation and therefore it’s complementary to the other ALM machines within EADS Innovation Works at Filton in the U.K., which are sized with larger build chambers for real applications and larger components,” said Katja Schmidtke, a research engineer in EADS Innovation Works’ Technical Capability Center 2 (TCC 2) for metallic technologies and surface engineering.

Schmidtke explained that since few metallic alloys currently are characterized for Additive Layer Manufacturing from the properties viewpoint, the EADS Innovation Works/SLM Solutions cooperation will provide valuable research opportunities. It will cover established, currently-used powders based on aluminum, titanium and nickel alloys, along with new materials like Invar or platinum, and other metal solutions.

Hans J. Ihde, Managing director of SLM Solutions GmbH, sees the efforts of SLM Solutions confirmed: "We did work many years as pioneer and technology leader in the ALM systems and did invest in research and development of equipment and materials. With EADS Innovation Works, we have a partner that helps support our philosophy and the way we work." Henner Schöneborn, Technical Director, adds: "Together with EADS Innovation Works, we will optimize both their plants and continue to create new materials to withstand even higher demands.”
